Sunbury Plantation Ruins

Years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Stevens' stunning home stood perched on top of several brick-fortified terraces, overlooking the Midway River and surrounding marshes.

Even though very little of their home has survived, the entryway leading up from the river is still one of the most elaborate on the Georgia coast. Locals say that the terraces used to be filled with oleander bushes, making the property a sight to behold.

Based on what little information I could find, the property is known as "Sunbury Plantation" - but it wasn't a working plantation in the historic sense. It seems that the house was built in the 1950s and was later destroyed by fire. The most interesting surviving structure is the Cold War-era fallout bunker. There is also a kennel, guest house, and garage - but the property itself is largely unused today.

Allen Stevens reportedly owned quite a bit of land throughout Sunbury, including a fish camp and restaurant. Locals also recall that the Stevens couple planted azaleas on all their properties.
